The key simplification comes from understanding what “maximum matching at most one” forces structurally inside a tree. If a connected subgraph contains two edges that do not share a vertex, then those two edges already form a matching of size two. So the forbidden configuration is exactly the existence of two vertex-disjoint edges.

This immediately restricts the shape of valid connected subgraphs. If we pick a vertex with degree at least three inside the chosen subgraph, then at least two of its incident edges are disjoint from each other except at that vertex, which is still fine, but once we extend beyond distance one we risk creating two independent edges. The only safe connected structures are paths of length at most two edges, or stars where only one edge is effectively used, but connectivity forces more structure.

A cleaner way to view it is to classify valid connected subgraphs by their diameter. If there are two edges in a connected tree-subgraph that do not share a vertex, then the diameter is at least 3 edges. This leads to a tree DP where we count, for each node, how many ways to form valid structures where that node acts as the highest point of the structure, aggregating contributions from children and ensuring we never select more than one child edge in a way that would create two independent edges.

Algorithm Walkthrough

Each node u maintains three quantities derived from its subtree:

First, we count ways to form valid connected subgraphs whose highest point is u and which use exactly one incident edge downward. This corresponds to picking one child v and then optionally extending further in v’s subtree but in a way that does not create a second independent edge.

Third, we account for the single-edge subgraphs where u is one endpoint and we choose exactly one neighbor.

The DP state can be simplified further by noticing that each valid connected subgraph is either an edge or a path of length two. Any larger structure would force at least two disjoint edges in a tree, which violates the constraint.

So we count:

  1. Every edge contributes one valid subgraph (just the two endpoints).
  2. Every path of length two contributes one valid subgraph (three vertices in a line).
