A naive approach would recompute connected components after each update and then compute diameters using BFS or DFS. That already costs linear time per query, which leads to roughly 4e10 operations in the worst case when n and q are both large, far beyond any feasible limit.
A more subtle issue appears when thinking locally. Coloring a path black can split the remaining white vertices into multiple disconnected components. For example, in a star shaped tree, painting a path through the center removes the only articulation point and disconnects many leaves. A naive approach that only tracks global counts or assumes connectivity changes locally will fail because a single path operation can affect Θ(n) components.
The key difficulty is that updates are global along a tree path, and each update can touch many vertices. We need a representation where each vertex is processed only a small number of times across all operations.
Approaches
A direct simulation recomputes everything after each operation. For every query, we would rebuild induced subgraphs for white and black vertices, then compute their diameters. Even with efficient BFS, each query is O(n), which is too slow.
The structural insight is to stop thinking in terms of recomputing components and instead maintain connectivity incrementally. Since vertices only switch from white to black, we can process the operations in reverse. In reverse time, we start with all vertices black and each operation turns a path from black back to white. This converts deletions into insertions.
Now the problem becomes dynamic insertion of vertices into a forest, and we must maintain the diameter of each connected component of active (white) vertices. The crucial simplification is that adding a vertex only creates new edges between already active neighbors in the original tree. Each vertex has only O(1) neighbors, so once we know which vertices are active, unions are local.
The remaining challenge is how to activate all vertices on a path efficiently. This is where heavy-light decomposition becomes useful. Any tree path can be broken into O(log n) segments, and each segment can activate all vertices in a contiguous range. Each vertex is activated exactly once in the reversed process, so the total work over all operations is linear up to logarithmic factors.
Once a vertex is activated, we connect it in a DSU structure to all active neighbors. Each DSU component maintains its diameter endpoints. When two components merge, the new diameter is the maximum among previous diameters and the best cross pair formed by combining endpoints of both components.
This yields an offline solution where each vertex is inserted once and each union is near constant amortized time.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We process the operations in reverse order, turning path deletions into vertex activations.
- We initialize all vertices as inactive (corresponding to all-black state in reversed time), and maintain a DSU structure over vertices. Each DSU component stores its current diameter endpoints.
- We build a heavy-light decomposition of the tree to support fast traversal of any path as a union of segments.
- For each reversed operation corresponding to a path u to v, we decompose the path into HLD segments and activate every vertex on those segments if not already active. Activation is done exactly once per vertex across the entire process.
- When a vertex becomes active, we inspect its neighbors in the original tree. If a neighbor is already active, we union their DSU components. Each union updates the diameter of the merged component using endpoint relaxation: we test distances between the four endpoints of the two components.
- After processing each reversed operation, we record the current maximum diameter among all DSU components. This value corresponds to the answer after the corresponding forward operation.
The correctness rests on the fact that at any moment, active vertices form exactly the white set in the forward process. DSU components match connected components of active vertices, since edges only exist in the original tree and are activated through endpoints.
Each component maintains correct diameter because any longest path must have endpoints among the endpoints of the merged subcomponents, a standard property of tree diameters.
