Algorithm Walkthrough

We interpret the circular RNA as a sequence of directed edges between consecutive characters, including the last to the first. Each edge contributes to potential future cuts or splices depending on its type.

We maintain a global counter of how many linear strands currently exist, and we maintain counts of transitions between nucleotides.

  3. For a CUT(x, y), we toggle or activate the transition from x to y as a separator. If cnt[x][y] > 0, then those occurrences become split points. Each such activation increases the number of linear segments by cnt[x][y], because each occurrence of that adjacency breaks a cycle or strand.
  4. For a SPLICE(x, y), we attempt to remove previously enforced separations between x and y transitions. Each removal decreases the number of linear segments by cnt[x][y], because previously split boundaries become mergeable again.
  5. After each operation, the answer is the current number of linear components implied by the remaining active cuts. Since merges are forced until stabilization, the system always collapses to a unique stable partition determined by active transitions.

Why it works

Every strand boundary is induced by a directed adjacency in the original circular sequence. The solution compresses the circular string into a 4 by 4 adjacency matrix so that every operation can be evaluated without scanning the original string again. The active matrix stores whether a CUT constraint is currently applied for a given directed nucleotide pair.

After each query, we recompute the number of linear strands by starting from one component and adding contributions from all active cut edges.
