A direct enumeration of all (X, Y) pairs per query would reach O(N^2) per query in the worst case, which is completely infeasible.
The more subtle difficulty comes from negative values. Since A[i] can be negative, the best product does not necessarily come from picking the largest values. Two negatives can produce a positive contribution, and mixing signs across the four factors changes ordering completely. Any solution that assumes monotonicity of values inside the range will fail.
A typical failure case arises when the array contains both large positive and large negative values inside the segment. For example, if A[L] and A[R] are negative, maximizing the product may require picking the most negative internal values, not the largest ones. Similarly, if endpoints have opposite signs, the strategy for choosing X and Y flips entirely.

A brute-force solution fixes L and R and tries every possible pair (X, Y) inside the interval. For each pair, it computes the product A[L] × A[X] × A[Y] × A[R] and keeps the maximum. This is correct because it directly evaluates the definition of the problem.
However, for a segment of length K, this requires examining O(K^2) pairs. Over many queries, this degenerates into O(N^2 Q) in the worst case, which is far too slow even for moderate input sizes. The bottleneck is the need to consider all pairs of interior indices independently for every query.
The key observation is that L and R are fixed in each query, so their contribution is a constant multiplicative factor. The entire optimization depends only on choosing two internal elements X and Y to maximize A[X] × A[Y], subject to L < X < Y < R. Once we separate endpoints, the problem reduces to maximizing a pair product inside a range.
This turns the task into a classic range query problem over pair products: for each interval, we want the maximum product of two distinct elements inside it. The endpoints can then be multiplied in afterward.
To support this efficiently over many queries, we precompute a segment tree that stores, for each segment, the best possible product of two elements in that segment, along with enough information to merge two child segments. Each node keeps a small set of extreme values: the largest and smallest few numbers in the segment. Since products can be maximized either by two large positives or two large negatives, we only need a constant number of candidates per segment.
When merging two segments, we combine their extreme values and recompute the best internal pair product from those candidates. This ensures each node summarizes everything needed to answer any query crossing it.

Algorithm Walkthrough

Why it works: any optimal pair (X, Y) inside a segment must achieve its maximum either through the largest positives or the smallest negatives. Since any product of two numbers is determined by extremes, keeping the top two and bottom two values in each segment is sufficient to reconstruct all candidate optimal products during merges.
