We need a way to reduce the search space while still guaranteeing that every possible length-5 horizontal or vertical segment contains at least one chosen probe cell.
This turns into a covering problem. We want a set of grid points such that every consecutive block of five cells in any row or any column intersects the set. The key observation is that periodic structure in both dimensions can enforce this guarantee.
