The structural insight comes from viewing the tournament as a binary merge tree. Each segment of the bracket produces a single winner, and the identity of that winner depends on whether Alternet can ensure that no real player survives in his path.
Instead of tracking individual matches, we only need to know whether a segment of the bracket can be “cleared” of real players using available friends. Each friend acts as a single-use blocker that can remove exactly one real player somewhere in the subtree it is placed in. Since friends can be rearranged in ordering and match outcomes between friends are fully controllable, we can treat them as flexible resources distributed across segments.
We process segments bottom-up. For each segment, we compute how many real players survive if we optimally assign friends in that segment. If at any point a segment contains more real players than available friends in that segment plus incoming support from children, it is impossible to clear it.
The crucial observation is that the tournament structure behaves like interval merging: each segment requires enough “friend power” to eliminate all real players except possibly one path leading to Alternet. If every segment along Alternet’s path can be made safe, Alternet can reach the final and win.
This reduces the problem to checking whether the number of real players can be dominated by available friend resources in every subtree consistent with Alternet’s position.
