Approaches

The brute-force way to think about the problem is to model every stop as a node in a graph. We add edges of weight 0 between all pairs of stops inside the same bus interval, and edges of weight 1 between consecutive stops i and i+1 representing walking. Then we run a shortest path algorithm from 1 to n.

This is correct, but completely infeasible. Each interval of length L adds O(L^2) zero-weight edges in the worst interpretation if fully expanded, and even if optimized, we still end up with a graph over 2 · 10^5 nodes and potentially overlapping dense connectivity. A shortest path algorithm like Dijkstra would then be too slow due to the implicit structure of the interval connectivity.

The key observation is that bus intervals do not create arbitrary connections, they only merge contiguous regions on a line. If two intervals overlap or touch, then any stop in their union can reach any other without walking. This means we do not need a graph over individual stops at all. We only need to understand how intervals merge into maximal connected segments on the number line.

Once we compress all overlapping intervals into disjoint merged segments, the problem becomes purely about walking between these segments. Inside each segment, cost is zero. Between segments, the only way forward is walking the gap between the end of one segment and the start of the next.

We then process segments in order from left to right, accumulating walking cost only when we need to move from one segment to the next without overlap.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We transform the problem into interval merging followed by a greedy traversal along the number line.

  1. Sort all bus intervals by their starting point. This ensures we process them in the natural left-to-right order of the street.
  2. Merge overlapping or touching intervals into maximal segments. We maintain a current segment [curL, curR]. For each interval [L, R], if L ≤ curR, we extend curR = max(curR, R), otherwise we finalize the current segment and start a new one. This step is justified because any overlap creates full zero-cost connectivity inside the union.
  3. After merging, we obtain disjoint segments that represent all places where movement is free.
  4. Now simulate moving from position 1 to position n. We keep a pointer pos starting at 1 and scan segments in increasing order.
  5. For each segment [L, R], if pos is already inside the segment (L ≤ pos ≤ R), we can jump to R for free and continue.
  6. If pos is left of the segment (pos < L), we must walk from pos to L, so we add L − pos to the answer and then “enter” the segment, after which we can move freely to R.
  7. If pos is beyond a segment (pos > R), we ignore it because it cannot help us progress forward.
  8. Continue until we reach or pass n, at which point we stop.

The key idea is that we only ever pay walking cost when crossing gaps between disconnected free regions.

Why it works

The merged segments represent maximal regions where every point is connected via overlapping bus intervals. Inside such a region, any movement can be simulated by chaining bus rides, so it has zero cost.

Between two consecutive merged segments, there is no interval overlap bridging the gap, meaning no sequence of bus rides can cross that gap without stepping outside bus coverage. The code begins by sorting all intervals so that overlapping regions can be merged in a single pass. The merging step builds the maximal zero-cost components of the line.

After that, the traversal simulates moving from left to right. The variable pos always represents the farthest point we can reach for free or after paying the accumulated walking cost. When pos is inside a merged segment, we extend it to the segment’s right endpoint without cost. When pos is before a segment, we pay exactly the gap to enter it.

A subtle point is that we always jump pos directly to r when inside a segment, because within a connected interval, all intermediate stops are reachable without cost, so there is no reason to stop earlier.
