However, each query may require scanning all $k$ segments in the worst case, making the complexity $O(k)$ per query. With $10^5$ queries and $k = 10^5$, this becomes infeasible.

The key observation is that each segment in the cyclic array defines a deterministic “activation region” on the tree: the set of nodes lying on the path between two consecutive values. A query is asking for the first segment, starting from a position $p$, whose activation region contains a target node $u$, and then the exact offset inside that segment.

This transforms the problem into a two-layer structure. The outer layer is a search over segments in cyclic order. The inner layer is a static tree path membership check. Once we can quickly answer whether a segment covers a node, we can reduce the problem to finding the next valid segment efficiently.

The remaining difficulty is supporting updates, since modifying one array position affects only two adjacent segments. This locality allows us to maintain a structure over segments rather than rebuilding everything.

We can precompute LCA and use heavy-light decomposition to represent any tree path as a union of $O(\log n)$ segments over an Euler or base array. This lets us represent each array transition as a small collection of intervals. A segment “covers” a node if its Euler index lies inside any of these intervals.

Then we maintain a segment tree over the cyclic array indices. Each segment tree node stores merged interval information representing all paths in that range. Algorithm Walkthrough

  6. Once we find such a segment, we compute the exact distance from the segment start node to $u$ using LCA distances, and add the accumulated distance from starting position $p$ to reach segment $i$.
  7. For updates, changing $v[p]$ affects only segments $p-1$ and $p$. We recompute their interval representations and update the segment tree accordingly.

Why it works

The correctness rests on separating the walk into independent segments. Each segment contributes a fixed geometric object on the tree: a path. Whether a node is visited depends only on whether it lies inside one of these objects. Because HLD reduces path membership to interval containment, the problem becomes a dynamic set of intervals over segment indices. The segment tree ensures we always retrieve the earliest active interval containing the target node, preserving chronological order of traversal.
