Two people matter: Psyduck, who starts at a uniformly chosen station, and Iron Bundle, who is located at some station. The cost of a scenario is the shortest path distance between them in the tree.

Now we are allowed to remove exactly one edge from the tree. After removing it, the graph splits into two connected components. Archaludon will reveal which component Iron Bundle is in, so Psyduck will only ever search within that same component. Any start position in the other component is effectively discarded, since Psyduck cannot reach Iron Bundle there.

So for a chosen edge, we only care about pairs of nodes that remain in the same connected component as Iron Bundle. Equivalently, we split the tree into two parts and only keep distances between pairs of nodes inside each part, summing distances independently in both components.

The task is to choose which edge to remove so that this remaining total sum of shortest-path distances inside components is minimized.

The input size goes up to 2×10^5 nodes in total, so any solution that recomputes distances from scratch per edge would be far too slow. A quadratic or even O(n^2) per test idea immediately fails under these constraints. We need an O(n) or O(n log n) approach per test case.

A subtle failure case for naive thinking appears when assuming that cutting the edge that splits the tree most evenly (by subtree size) is always optimal. That is false because what matters is not just how many nodes are separated, but how far apart they are in the tree.

For example, in a path of 4 nodes 1-2-3-4, cutting the middle edge splits into two size-2 components. Cutting an endpoint edge also splits into sizes 1 and 3. A naive size-based heuristic might pick the middle edge, but the actual reduction in total internal distance depends on how far nodes are from each other, not just counts.

Approaches

The brute-force approach is straightforward. For every edge, remove it, run a DFS or BFS from each node in each resulting component, compute all-pairs shortest path distances inside components, and sum them. This already costs O(n) per root, so O(n^2) per edge, giving O(n^3) per test in the worst case. Even optimizing BFS still leaves O(n^2) per edge, which is completely infeasible for n up to 2×10^5.

The key observation is that we do not need to recompute distances from scratch. The only change when removing one edge is that all paths that cross this edge disappear entirely. Everything else inside each side remains identical to the original tree distances.

So instead of recomputing per cut, we start from the full sum of all pairwise distances in the tree and subtract exactly the contribution of pairs whose paths cross the removed edge. If we can compute, for every edge, how much “cross-component distance” it contributes, then we can evaluate every candidate in linear time.

The difficulty reduces to computing, for each edge, the total sum of distances between nodes in its two sides. This can be handled using a rooted tree DP where we compute subtree sizes and distance sums, and then reroot information so that we can evaluate the contribution of each edge in O(1).

Algorithm Walkthrough

We root the tree at any node, say node 1. This gives a clean direction to every edge, turning it into a parent-child relationship.

  1. Compute subtree sizes using a DFS. For every node u, we compute sz[u], the number of nodes in its subtree. This is needed because every edge split corresponds to a subtree versus the rest of the tree.
  2. Compute a first DP value down[u], the sum of distances from u to all nodes in its subtree. This is done in a postorder DFS by accumulating child contributions and adding subtree sizes to account for edge lengths.
  3. Compute global distance sums using rerooting. We maintain dp[u], the sum of distances from u to every node in the entire tree. Starting from the root, we propagate values to children using the standard reroot relation: moving the root across an edge increases distances to nodes in the moved subtree by +1 and decreases distances to all other nodes by -1.
  4. For every edge from a parent u to a child v, we evaluate what happens if that edge is removed. The tree splits into two components: the subtree of v, and the rest of the tree.
  5. The total remaining cost after removal is the sum of internal distances inside both components. That equals:

the total original sum of all pairwise distances, minus the sum of distances between nodes in different components. 6. We compute the cross-component contribution for edge (u, v) using subtree size information and rerooted distance sums. The key idea is that all cross pairs are exactly those between subtree v and the rest of the tree, and their total contribution can be derived from DP values in O(1) per edge. 7. Take the minimum value over all edges.

Why it works

The invariant is that every pair of nodes either remains entirely within one component after removing an edge, or is completely eliminated. There is no partial change to distances: each pair is either fully counted or fully removed. Because of this binary behavior, the effect of each edge can be isolated independently as the total contribution of cross-component pairs, and DP ensures those contributions are computed without double counting.
