Since a single element can be part of many operations before it disappears, this simulation may require $O(nk)$ updates in the worst case, which is too slow.

The key observation is that the structure of valid segments only changes when an element becomes zero. Between two such events, the same segment continues to be the best choice repeatedly, because no internal ordering changes inside that segment, only a uniform shift downward.

Why it works
