Whenever we travel between two nodes, the cost of that travel is defined by the maximum damage value along the unique path connecting them. After we traverse a path, all nodes on that path have their damage values permanently reduced to zero, so future traversals will not pay again for those nodes even if they lie on later paths.
The task is to choose an order of visiting the special nodes that minimizes the total accumulated travel cost under this “first time only” maximum-on-path rule.
The constraints go up to two hundred thousand nodes, which immediately rules out any approach that recomputes path maximums or simulates each move directly. Even a single all-pairs path query would be too slow. We need a structure that compresses repeated traversals and avoids recomputing path information from scratch.
A subtle difficulty appears when thinking greedily about visiting special nodes. The cost of moving between two nodes depends on the maximum node weight on their path, but once a node is used once, it becomes irrelevant for all future paths. This breaks the usual assumption that edge weights are fixed. A naive shortest path or Steiner tree approach does not apply directly because costs evolve after each move.
Edge cases that break naive ideas include situations where the optimal path between two special nodes shares a high-weight node with other pairs. If we visit in the wrong order, we might pay for that high node multiple times even though a better ordering would “consume” it early. For example, if a single node with very large damage lies on many paths between special nodes, visiting pairs in an order that delays traversing that node leads to repeated large costs in naive simulations, even though the correct strategy would ensure it is paid at most once.

A direct simulation would try every permutation of visiting special nodes. For each move, we compute the maximum node value along the path using LCA or DFS preprocessing. Each query costs O(log N), and there are M moves, so each permutation costs O(M log N), and with M factorial permutations this becomes impossible.
Even if we fix an order and optimize path queries, we still face the fundamental issue that node values change after traversal, so recomputation is needed or we must maintain dynamic structure of remaining active nodes.
The key observation is that each node’s damage is paid at most once, and it is paid exactly when the first time any path requiring it as a maximum crosses it. Instead of thinking in terms of paths between special nodes, we can reverse perspective: each node contributes its weight at most once, and we should determine whether it is ever the maximum on some required connection.
This naturally suggests processing nodes in decreasing order of damage. When we consider a node with value D, we ask: does this node lie on any connection we still need to realize between special nodes that are not yet “connected” through previously processed higher nodes? If yes, then this node must be paid once, because at the moment we first connect those components, it will be the highest remaining weight on that path.
We can model this using a DSU (disjoint set union) over the tree. We activate nodes in descending order of their damage. Initially only special nodes are marked as “required endpoints,” and we gradually connect nodes as their damage threshold is lowered. When processing a node, we unite it with already activated neighbors. If this causes two components that both contain special nodes to merge, then the current node is the bottleneck that enables that connection, and its damage is added once for that merge.
The problem reduces to a Kruskal-like process on a tree where node weights act as “activation times,” and we are effectively building a forest of special nodes. Each time two special components merge, we pay the current node value once.

Algorithm Walkthrough
- Sort all nodes in descending order of damage value. We interpret this as gradually “activating” nodes from highest risk to lowest, since high damage nodes are the ones that dominate path costs first.
- Maintain a DSU structure where each node initially forms its own set. Also maintain for each set whether it currently contains at least one special node. This is essential because we only care when two special-containing components merge.
- Maintain an array that tracks whether a node is activated. We process nodes in sorted order, and when a node is processed, we mark it active and attempt to union it with all already active neighbors in the tree. This builds connectivity exactly along feasible paths under the current threshold.
- When performing a union between two components, we check whether both components already contain at least one special node. If both do, then connecting them is meaningful for the final visitation plan, and we add the current node’s damage value to the answer once. After that, we merge the components and propagate the fact that the merged component contains a special node if either side did.
- Continue until all nodes are processed. The accumulated sum is the final answer.
The reason we add the value only when two special components merge is that this moment corresponds to the first time a path is “forced” through this node as the highest available weight connecting those regions. Any later traversal will only go through nodes of lower or equal weight, which are already activated and therefore already accounted for.
Why it works
At any point in the decreasing order sweep, the active nodes form a forest of components connected by paths whose maximum node weight is at least the current threshold. When two components containing special nodes first become connected, every path between those special nodes must pass through the current node or another node of equal or higher weight, but such nodes are not yet fully activated in a way that would allow an alternative cheaper connection. Therefore, the current node is the minimal bottleneck that enables connectivity between those components, and it contributes exactly once to the final cost. This ensures every node is charged exactly when it first becomes necessary as a maximum on some required connection path.

The DSU maintains connectivity only through nodes that have already been activated, which guarantees that we only consider paths whose maximum node value is at least the current node being processed. The has_special flag tracks whether a component contains any required node, so we only pay when two meaningful components merge.

Edge Cases

In a star-shaped tree where the center has the highest weight and all leaves are special nodes, the center should contribute exactly once. As nodes activate from highest to lowest, each leaf connects to the center without triggering a special-to-special merge. Only when the second leaf connects does a merge between two special-containing components occur, causing a single addition of the center weight.
