Algorithm Walkthrough

- Alongside $A[v]$, compute a sensitivity descriptor $B[v]$, which represents how much the root would change if the total contribution of subtree $v$ increases by exactly one unit at the level of $S[v]$. This is derived by analyzing how the function $f(S) = \max(0, l - |l - S|)$ changes when $S$ is incremented, which is piecewise linear.
- Perform a second traversal from the root downward. We maintain a running “external contribution” that represents the effect of attaching the new leaf at different positions. When we conceptually attach a leaf at node $i$, we increase $S[i]$ by 1, and propagate the induced change upward using precomputed sensitivity information.
- For each node $i$, compute the effect of this perturbation on the root by combining the precomputed path contributions from $i$ to 1. Why it works
The function $f(S) = \max(0, l - |l - S|)$ is piecewise linear with breakpoints only at $S = 0$, $S = l$, and $S = 2l$. Within each region, the effect of changing $S$ by 1 is constant. This means every subtree behaves like a linear transducer with saturation boundaries. The entire tree becomes a composition of linear segments, so a single-unit perturbation propagates through a fixed linear map until it hits saturation, at which point it either stops affecting or flips slope. Because the tree has no cycles, these transitions can only occur once per node per query, allowing us to precompute all necessary transitions in linear time.
