Instead, we can separate the contribution of a candidate edge into two independent parts: how far we can reach its start from $s$, and how far we can go from its end to $t$. This suggests precomputing shortest paths in two directions.

We run Dijkstra once from $s$ to compute $dist_s[x]$, the shortest distance from $s$ to every node. Then we reverse all edges and run Dijkstra from $t$ to compute $dist_t[x]$, which gives shortest distances from every node to $t$.

Now each candidate edge $u \to v$ with weight $w$ can form a full path $s \to u \to v \to t$ with cost $dist_s[u] + w + dist_t[v]$. We take the minimum over all candidates and also compare with the original $dist_s[t]$.
