A “Set” operation modifies a single position in a single server at a specific time, and a “Get” operation queries a value from one server at one position at a specific time. The twist is that all servers periodically synchronize every s time units, and during synchronization they become identical again. When they reconcile differences, each array position is resolved by picking the value that comes from the most recent modification time across all servers.

A useful way to think about this is that every position behaves like an independent system with a “last write wins” rule, but only within the scope of the most recent synchronization cycle. Synchronization effectively resets the system to a consistent global state, merging all updates that happened since the previous sync.

The constraints push us away from any solution that touches all servers or scans arrays per query. With up to 10^6 operations and arrays up to 10^5, any per-operation O(n) or even O(k) approach is impossible. Even per-server state maintenance is too expensive if we are not careful, because naive synchronization would require O(k·n) work every s time units, which could be 10^10 operations in worst case.

A subtle edge case comes from synchronization ordering. If a request arrives exactly at a time t where t mod s = 0, synchronization happens first, then the request is applied. This changes the meaning of “which updates belong to which cycle”.

A small example where this matters is:

At time 5, synchronization happens before the query. So the query sees the state after merging updates up to time 5. A naive implementation that processes queries first would incorrectly observe stale state.

Another subtle issue is that updates on different servers are not independent forever. They can be overwritten by later synchronization merges, so storing only per-server arrays without tracking time ordering globally loses correctness.

Approaches

A brute force idea is to literally simulate each server independently. For every Set, we update one server’s array. For Get, we read directly. Every s time units we trigger synchronization, scanning all positions across all servers and selecting the most recent update timestamp per position.

This is correct, but synchronization is catastrophic. Each sync costs O(k·n), and there can be up to O(10^9 / s) sync events. Even if s is large, worst-case still explodes to about 10^14 operations in degenerate settings. The real issue is that synchronization forces a full recomputation of every cell across all servers.

The key observation is that synchronization is global but position-wise independent. Each array position evolves independently of others. For a fixed position i, we only care about the most recent assignment among all servers, but only within the current synchronization segment. This suggests that instead of storing full arrays per server, we only need to track per position the latest write time and value, but that state resets logically at synchronization boundaries.

Instead of explicitly syncing all servers, we reinterpret the system as a timeline split into cycles of length s. Within each cycle, updates override previous ones, and at cycle boundaries, the state is merged into a “baseline” that becomes the starting point for the next cycle. The crucial reduction is that we never need to simulate servers separately; we only need a global structure that stores, for each position, the last write in the current cycle plus the committed value from previous cycles.

To make this efficient, we maintain two layers of state: a committed global array representing the synchronized state up to the last full cycle, and a temporary structure for the current cycle storing updates since the last synchronization. When a synchronization boundary is reached, we flush the temporary updates into the committed array by taking the latest timestamp per position. Since we must support up to 10^6 queries, we ensure that each position is only processed when it is actually modified, using a lazy dictionary rather than scanning all n positions.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We process events in increasing time order, keeping track of the current synchronization cycle.

  1. We compute the current cycle index as t // s. Whenever the cycle index increases, we perform a synchronization step. This step merges all pending updates from the previous cycle into the committed state.
  2. We maintain a dictionary per server (or equivalently a shared structure keyed by server-position) storing the last update time and value within the current cycle. When we apply a Set sid pos val, we store (time, val) for that pair, overwriting any previous update in the same cycle.
  3. For each Get sid pos, we must decide whether the latest relevant value is from the committed state or from the current cycle. If there is a pending update for that (sid, pos) in the current cycle, we compare its timestamp against the last synchronization boundary. If it is newer, we use it; otherwise we fall back to the committed array value.
  4. During synchronization, we iterate only over the keys that were modified in the current cycle. For each (sid, pos), we update the committed value at pos if the stored timestamp is larger than the current committed timestamp for that position. After processing, we clear the temporary structure.
  5. After processing all queries, we continue answering Get operations using the same rule, ensuring that each query sees a state consistent with all prior sync boundaries.

The reason this works is that synchronization only depends on the most recent write per position. Any older updates in the same cycle are irrelevant, and updates outside the cycle are already represented in the committed state. Thus each position only needs to remember one best candidate per cycle plus one global committed value.

The implementation separates the world into committed state and current-cycle state. The committed arrays store the last synchronized snapshot, along with timestamps so we can compare freshness. The pending dictionary stores only modifications in the current cycle, which is essential because synchronization only cares about relative ordering within a cycle.

Cycle transitions are handled lazily. Instead of simulating every second, we detect when the integer division t // s changes. At that moment, we flush pending updates into committed state. This avoids any periodic loop over time.

The Get operation checks pending first because it represents the most recent unsynchronized updates. If no pending update exists or it is older than the committed state, we return the committed value.

Edge Cases

A critical edge case is when a query arrives exactly at a synchronization boundary. For input where s = 5 and t = 5, synchronization must happen before reading pending updates.
