In the worst case this becomes infeasible under 10^6 edges.

The key observation is that we do not actually need to track full path histories. The answer depends only on the maximum and second maximum edge in the chosen path, so we can try to “guess” what these two edges are.

Suppose we fix a threshold W and ask: is there a path from 1 to n whose maximum edge weight is at most W? This is a standard connectivity query on the subgraph of edges ≤ W. Now suppose we also want to control the second-largest edge. If we pick the largest edge in the path as some edge of weight W, then the second-largest edge must be as small as possible while still allowing connectivity between the two endpoints if we remove that edge.

This suggests a structural reformulation: for each edge, imagine it is the maximum edge in the answer path. If we force this edge to be the maximum, we only need to connect its endpoints using edges of weight ≤ W, but excluding the edge itself, and then ensure that within that connecting path the maximum edge is minimized. A cleaner way to see it is to sort edges by weight. We maintain connectivity as we add edges in increasing order. Algorithm Walkthrough

We sort all edges in increasing order of weight. The intuition is that when we consider an edge of weight w, we are deciding whether w can serve as the largest edge in an optimal answer, and we want to know the best possible second-largest edge that can pair with it.

We maintain a union-find structure over vertices, where components represent connectivity using only edges processed so far. For each component, we maintain a representative value that tracks the best internal “second bottleneck candidate” seen so far. Concretely, this value represents the minimum possible maximum edge weight on any path between any two nodes already connected within the component using earlier edges.

We process edges in increasing order. When we process an edge (u, v, w), we look at the components Cu and Cv containing u and v.

If Cu and Cv are different, this edge can connect them. Any path that uses this edge as the maximum must combine it with a path entirely inside Cu ∪ Cv using edges of weight ≤ w. The best second-largest edge is determined by the best internal connectivity path between Cu and Cv before merging. We use stored component values to compute a candidate answer w plus that internal value, and update the global minimum.

After processing the candidate, we union Cu and Cv, merging their stored component information so future edges see the updated connectivity.

We also separately consider the case where a path uses only one edge. For that, the answer is simply the minimum edge weight that connects 1 and n directly, so we track that as well.

Why it works

At the moment we process an edge of weight w, any optimal path whose maximum edge is w must have all other edges with weight ≤ w. By sorting edges, all such edges are already present in the DSU structure. The second-largest edge is exactly the worst edge inside the best possible connecting path between the two endpoints of the maximum edge. The DSU augmentation guarantees that for any two vertices in the same component, we retain enough information to recover the minimal possible maximum internal edge needed to connect them, so every candidate pair (maximum edge, second maximum edge) is evaluated exactly once when the maximum edge is considered.
