Algorithm Walkthrough
We process each color independently and compute the expected time contribution of that color, then sum over all colors.
- For a fixed color with k pairs (2k socks), we define a DP state that tracks how many socks of this color have not yet been processed from the machine and how many are currently sitting in the unmatched pool.
- From a state, we consider drawing a sock of this color. Since the global process chooses uniformly among all remaining socks, the probability of drawing this color at any step is proportional to how many socks of this color remain. In expectation, this allows us to scale time contributions by the remaining count of this color.
- When a sock is drawn, we pay one second immediately for extraction. After that, we attempt to match it in the unmatched pool. If there are m socks of this color already in the unmatched pool, the scan cost depends on where the matching sock appears in a random permutation of those m socks. The expected position of a fixed element in a random ordering is (m+1)/2, so expected scan cost is proportional to current unmatched count.
- If no match is found, the sock is added to the unmatched pool, increasing m by one.
- If a match is found, one unmatched sock is removed, decreasing m by one, and no insertion happens.

Why it works
