Suppose we choose some passengers as pushers. Their total pushing force must be at least the weight that remains on the bus. The remaining weight consists of the empty bus plus the masses of every passenger who did not get out.
The task is to choose as few pushers as possible while satisfying this condition. If no choice of passengers can move the bus, the answer is -1.
The total number of passengers over all test cases is at most 2 × 10^5. This immediately rules out trying every subset, since even 2^40 is already impossible, while 2^200000 is far beyond any practical computation. An O(n^2) algorithm is also too expensive because the worst case would require about 4 × 10^10 operations. An O(n log n) solution is easily fast enough for these limits.
Several edge cases deserve attention.
Consider a passenger whose force is much larger than everyone else's.

The most direct solution is to enumerate every subset of passengers. For each subset, compute the total pushing force and the remaining weight, then keep the smallest subset that satisfies the condition. This is correct because every possible choice is examined. Unfortunately, it requires O(2^n · n) time, which is completely infeasible.

- Read the masses and forces of all passengers.
- Compute the total passenger mass
M. The required contribution istarget = w + M. - For every passenger, compute
value = mass + force. This measures how much selecting that passenger helps. Their force increases the left side of the inequality, while removing their mass decreases the required weight by exactly the same amount. - Sort all values in descending order. Since we want the fewest passengers, every chosen passenger should provide as much contribution as possible.
- Traverse the sorted values from largest to smallest, maintaining the accumulated contribution.
- As soon as the accumulated contribution becomes at least
target, output how many passengers have been taken. No smaller answer is possible because any other set with the same number of passengers has contribution no larger than the largest values already chosen. - If the entire list is processed without reaching the target, output
-1.
Why it works
The transformed inequality depends only on the sum of mass + force over the chosen passengers. Among all subsets containing exactly k passengers, the largest possible contribution is obtained by taking the k largest values. If these largest values fail to reach the target, then no other subset of size k can succeed. Conversely, once they do reach the target, a valid subset of size k exists. The first successful prefix of the sorted list is exactly the minimum number of required pushers.
