The constraint n ≤ 30 is small enough that exponential search over subsets is expected, but large enough that a naive 2^n enumeration needs structure. The brute-force idea is straightforward: iterate over every subset of symbols, compute its total score by summing all chosen diagonal terms and all pairwise interactions, and keep the best. For each subset, evaluating the score costs O(n^2), since we may check all pairs inside it. This leads to O(2^n · n^2), which for n = 30 is already around 10^9 operations, too slow in practice.

The structure of the problem is that the score is quadratic over a binary selection vector. Each subset defines a binary vector x, and the score is a quadratic form over x with coefficients given by d[i][j]. The key observation is that n is small enough for splitting the index set into two halves and treating interactions inside and across halves separately.

If we divide indices into a left half A and a right half B, any subset is a pair (SA, SB). The total score splits into three parts: internal score of SA, internal score of SB, and cross interactions between SA and SB. The internal parts depend only on each half independently and can be precomputed for all subsets of each half. The cross term is the difficulty, since it couples both sides.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We split the indices into two groups, A containing the first n/2 symbols and B containing the remaining symbols.

The solution begins by reconstructing the upper-triangular matrix into a full symmetric access form so that any pair can be queried consistently. The array is split into two halves to enable meet-in-the-middle enumeration.

The build_internal function computes the exact score for every subset inside one half using a standard subset DP where each new element is added by summing its interactions with already chosen elements. This avoids recomputing pair sums from scratch.
