Even if we restrict attention to reachable states, the branching factor is still high. Each of 4 cells can potentially move to up to 8 neighbors, giving up to 32 candidate moves per state, and connectivity validation costs at least O(4) or more. In a worst case where most of the grid is free, a BFS over raw 4-cell subsets explodes far beyond time limits.
The key observation is that although the slime is a set of 4 cells, its shape is always small and connected, so its local structure can be encoded more efficiently. Algorithm Walkthrough
We model each slime configuration as a tuple of four grid cells. A configuration is valid if all cells are inside the grid, are not holes, and form a single connected component under 4-direction adjacency.

- We use a queue for BFS and a visited set to avoid revisiting states. Each state is stored as a sorted tuple of its four coordinates so that permutations of the same shape are treated identically.
- For each state popped from the queue, we attempt all transformations. A transformation consists of choosing one of the four cells and moving it to one of its eight neighboring cells.
- For each candidate move, we form a new set of four cells by replacing the moved cell. We immediately reject it if the destination is outside the grid or is a hole.

Why it works
Every valid configuration of the slime is a node in an implicit graph, and every allowed transformation is an edge of weight one between nodes. The connectivity constraint ensures that each intermediate configuration is a valid node, so BFS never leaves the valid state space. Because all edges have equal cost, BFS guarantees that the first time we reach the target configuration, we have found the minimum number of transformations. The visited set ensures no configuration is processed more than once, preventing exponential blowup from revisiting equivalent shapes.
