On $10^5$ nodes this is infeasible.

The key structural observation is that the answer for node $i$ only depends on nodes with label greater than $i$. If we process nodes in decreasing order of labels, then when we are at node $i$, all nodes $i+1, i+2, \dots, N$ are already “active”. The problem becomes: for each node $i$, among a dynamically growing set of active nodes, find the closest one in tree distance, with a tie-break on index.

This is a classic “dynamic nearest colored node in a tree” problem. The standard tool for this is centroid decomposition. Algorithm Walkthrough

We first construct a centroid decomposition of the tree. This gives us a centroid tree where each original node belongs to a chain of centroid ancestors.

  5. Track the candidate with minimal total distance, breaking ties by smaller $j$.
  6. If no centroid provides any active node, the answer is $i$ itself.

The critical detail is that both activation and querying walk over the same centroid chain, so each node participates in $O(\log N)$ updates and queries.
