You are also given a fixed sequence of time jumps. You start in city 1, and immediately get transported to the first time moment in that sequence. After each time jump, you are allowed to move, but only very slightly: when you arrive at a time moment, you may traverse at most one road that exists in that moment before the next time jump occurs. Then you are forced to jump to the next time moment in the sequence, where you again may traverse at most one edge, and so on.

The goal is to reach city n starting from city 1 as early as possible in terms of number of time jumps used. Since the sequence of time moments is fixed, “earliest” means using the smallest prefix of the sequence while respecting that at each step you can optionally move along exactly one edge of the current graph.

The output is the minimum number of time jumps needed so that there exists a valid sequence of at most one-edge moves per time moment that takes you from city 1 to city n, or -1 if no such sequence exists.

The constraints imply a need for near linear or linearithmic processing over the total number of edges and time steps. The sum of all edges across time moments is at most 200000, and k is also up to 200000, so anything quadratic in either dimension is immediately impossible. A naive per-step BFS over full graphs or recomputing reachability from scratch at each time moment would be far too slow.

A subtle issue is that the state is not just the city, but implicitly includes how many time jumps we have consumed. However, movement is tightly restricted: between two consecutive time moments, you can only traverse one edge. This makes each time step act like a single “layer” in a layered graph, rather than allowing arbitrary multi-step traversal.

A common mistake is to assume that within a time moment you can fully traverse connected components. That is wrong because only one edge is allowed per moment. Another mistake is to ignore that revisiting the same city at different times matters; being in a city earlier can unlock different future single-edge moves.

Approaches

A brute-force idea is to treat each state as a pair consisting of current city and current time index. From each state, you can either stay in place or move along one edge of the current graph, then advance to the next time moment. This naturally forms a graph with up to O(nk) states. Each state transitions to many neighbors depending on adjacency in that time moment. Even if each edge is considered once per moment, the total transitions become O(∑m_i · k), which is far beyond the limit.

The key observation is that we never need to store more than the best time we can reach each city. Since time only increases and transitions are monotone, we can process time moments sequentially and maintain, for each city, the earliest moment at which it becomes reachable after performing the allowed single-edge move.

At each time moment i, we take all cities that are reachable at the start of that moment. From each such city, we can traverse at most one edge in the graph of moment i, meaning we relax neighbors in a single BFS-like expansion step, but only one layer deep. Then we carry the resulting set forward to the next time moment. This is essentially dynamic propagation of reachability across a sequence of graphs, where each graph allows one-step diffusion.

The important structure is that within each time moment, we only perform one relaxation wave, not a full BFS. This ensures total work across all moments is proportional to the number of edges.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We maintain a boolean or queue-based representation of which cities are reachable after each time moment.

  1. Initialize a boolean array cur of size n, with only city 1 marked reachable. This represents where we can stand right before entering the first time moment.
  2. For each time moment i from 1 to k, start with a fresh array nxt initialized to all false. This array represents cities reachable after using at most one edge in moment i.
  3. For every edge (u, v) in the graph of moment i, check whether u or v is currently reachable in cur. If u is reachable, mark v as reachable in nxt. If v is reachable, mark u as reachable in nxt. This simulates the allowed one-step traversal.
  4. Also copy all currently reachable nodes forward: if a node is reachable in cur, it is still valid to stay there without moving in this time moment, so it must also be marked in nxt.
  5. After processing all edges of moment i, check if city n is reachable in nxt. If yes, output i and terminate.
  6. Otherwise set cur = nxt and continue to the next time moment.

The reason we process edges directly rather than building adjacency lists per moment is that total edges over all moments is bounded, so iterating them directly is optimal.

Why it works

The key invariant is that after processing moment i, cur[v] is true if and only if there exists a sequence of valid time jumps and at most one edge traversal per moment that ends in city v after i moments.

The transition step preserves all previously reachable positions by copying cur into nxt, and then adds exactly those vertices that can be reached by one edge from any reachable vertex in the current moment. Since we never allow more than one edge per moment, and we apply exactly one relaxation step per moment, no invalid multi-step paths are introduced. Conversely, any valid path must correspond to choosing either zero or one edge at each moment, so it will be captured by this relaxation process.

The implementation directly follows the layered propagation idea. The key detail is initializing nxt as a copy of cur, which encodes the “no movement” option in each time moment.

Each time moment uses only its edge list, and we never build full adjacency structures, which avoids unnecessary overhead.

The answer is printed as soon as city n becomes reachable, since we are scanning time moments in increasing order and want the minimum prefix length.

Edge Cases

One edge case is when city 1 is already equal to city n, but constraints guarantee n ≥ 2, so this does not occur.

Another case is when no edges exist in any moment. The algorithm keeps cur unchanged across all steps, so city n never becomes reachable and output is correctly -1.
