The first step is to reinterpret the randomness. Since each step removes a uniformly random uninfected node, the infection order is a uniformly random permutation of all nodes. Thus each node v has a random death position Tv uniformly distributed over 1 to n.
If we arrive at a node at time t, we successfully observe its memory if Tv ≥ t. For a fixed path, the contribution of a memory visited at time t is therefore (n − t + 1) / n.
Linearity of expectation removes all coupling between nodes, so the objective becomes a deterministic optimization over a walk: maximize the sum of contributions of the first visit times of each memory node.
For each memory node xi visited at time t, its expected gain is (n+1)/n − t/n. Since k is fixed, maximizing total expectation is equivalent to minimizing the sum of arrival times of all memory nodes that we manage to visit. Because all contributions are positive for all t ≤ n, skipping a memory can never improve the objective, so an optimal solution always visits all k memory nodes exactly once.
This reduces the problem to choosing an order of visiting the k memory nodes, starting from node 1, while accounting for shortest path distances in the graph. The time to reach each next memory is the shortest-path distance from the current location.
This is a traveling salesman style dynamic programming problem, but with an additional twist: the objective depends on absolute arrival times, not just edge costs. That forces us to explicitly track elapsed time, since the cost of visiting the next node depends on the accumulated time so far.
A brute-force approach would try all permutations of the k memory nodes and compute shortest paths between them. This is already k! which is about 479k for k=12, and still manageable in isolation, but incorporating correct time accumulation and path transitions makes it necessary to evaluate each ordering carefully. The main challenge is that different orders induce different arrival times, and we must account for their effect exactly.
We therefore use dynamic programming over subsets, where each state keeps track of the current node, the set of visited memory nodes, and the current time. Since time is bounded by at most 30 steps per move and at most 12 moves, it remains small enough to explicitly store.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We first precompute all-pairs shortest paths between nodes using BFS from every node. This gives the exact travel time between any two relevant points.
Next, we compress the problem to only k memory nodes plus the starting node 1. All decisions happen over this reduced set, but distances come from the full graph.

- We update the DP for the new state (mask ∪ {j}, j, t') by keeping the minimal possible sum of arrival times that can lead to that configuration.
- After processing all subsets, we take the minimum over all states that have visited all k memories.
The result is then transformed back into expected value using the formula derived from linearity of expectation.
Why it works comes from the fact that infection is independent of movement and equivalent to a random permutation. This makes each node’s survival probability depend only on its arrival time. Once arrival times are fixed, the expectation decomposes into a sum of independent contributions. The only coupling between decisions is the graph constraint on travel times, and the DP explores all valid orders while preserving exact accumulated time, ensuring no ordering is missed and no arrival time is miscomputed.
