The key observation is that the only structural change in each step is the addition of a single node ON and edges incident only to ON. No existing edges are modified or removed. This means all previously computed shortest paths remain valid unless they can be improved by going through ON. Therefore, we do not need to recompute everything; we only need to propagate improvements starting from ON.

This reduces the problem to an incremental shortest path maintenance problem. After building ON and connecting it to some existing nodes, we compute the best possible distance to ON using already known shortest distances from node 0. Then we treat ON as a new source of potential improvements and run a Dijkstra-like propagation starting only from ON. Any relaxation must pass through ON, so we never need to re-run the algorithm from other nodes.

The correctness hinges on the fact that no old edge weights or connectivity change, so any new shorter path must include ON, and every such path starts with a known shortest path to one of ON’s neighbors.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We maintain the current graph and a distance array dist where dist[v] is the shortest known time from node 0 to v.

  1. Build the initial graph with N nodes and M edges, then run Dijkstra once from node 0 to initialize dist. This gives the baseline shortest paths before any requests.
  2. For each request, we are given OA and OB. We create a new node ON and determine all neighbors OE that should connect to ON. To do this efficiently, we iterate over the adjacency lists of OA and OB.
  3. For each candidate OE, we check whether OE is adjacent to OA, OB, or both. If it is only adjacent to one, we take the rule from that endpoint to decide the edge type. Why it works

Any shortest path after adding ON either does not use ON, in which case it was already correctly computed, or it uses ON. Any path using ON can be decomposed into a shortest path from node 0 to some OE, then one edge into ON, then further traversal. Since we compute the best possible dist[ON] from all such OE, and then run Dijkstra from ON, every improvement that can involve ON is discovered. No other node can introduce new improvements because no other distances or edges change.

Edge Cases

A key edge case is when OA and OB share many neighbors but disagree on most of them. In that case, ON may end up with very few edges or even none.
