We need to find the minimum number of nights required for our robot to reach F, while guaranteeing that no matter how the second robot moves, this collision never happens. If no such safe strategy exists, the answer is impossible.

The constraints are large, with up to 100,000 nodes and 200,000 edges. This rules out any approach that explores all paths or simulates both robots jointly in an exponential way. A solution should be close to linear or near-linear in the size of the graph, typically O(N + M).

A subtle difficulty is that the second robot is adversarial. Even if it does not choose a specific path, we must assume it always tries to make collision possible. That means we need to consider all vertices it could possibly occupy at each time step.

A naive mistake is to think we only need to avoid the shortest path distance from T increasing over time. For example, in a cycle, the second robot can delay reaching a vertex or revisit nodes, meaning it can appear in many more places than a single shortest-path layer would suggest.

Another failure mode appears when thinking that avoiding T’s BFS layers is enough. Consider a triangle graph where T is one vertex. After two steps, the adversary can be in any vertex of the same parity as a shortest path, meaning the unsafe region alternates with time and is not monotone in a simple “growing ball” sense.

Approaches

A direct brute force strategy would simulate all possible states of both robots over time. At each time step, we would track every possible position of the adversary and all reachable positions of our robot. The state space becomes a product of nodes and time, and transitions branch heavily on both sides. Even ignoring time, pairing positions already gives O(N²) possibilities, and adding time makes it infinite. This quickly becomes infeasible.

The key observation is that we do not actually need the exact position of the second robot. We only need to know whether it can possibly be at a given vertex at a given time.

This reduces the problem to a reachability question on the adversary’s side. From T, we compute the shortest distance d(v). If a vertex is at distance d(v), then at time t the adversary can be at v if it can complete a walk of exactly t steps ending at v. Because it can revisit edges, the only restriction is parity: once it can reach v in d(v) steps, it can also reach it in d(v) + 2, d(v) + 4, and so on.

So each vertex becomes unsafe at specific times: all t such that t ≥ d(v) and t has the same parity as d(v). This gives a clean time-dependent forbidden set.

Now our robot performs a shortest path search, but with time as part of the state. At time t, being in vertex v is valid only if v is not unsafe at time t. Since time increases by exactly one per night, we run a BFS over (node, time parity). The parity is sufficient because safety depends only on whether t matches the parity condition relative to d(v), and whether t exceeds the threshold.

This transforms the problem into a layered graph search with two layers per node, tracking even and odd times.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Run a BFS from T to compute shortest distances d(v) for every vertex. This represents the minimum time at which the adversary can first reach each vertex.
  2. For each vertex v, determine the first time it becomes unsafe. If d(v) is even, it is unsafe at times d(v), d(v)+2, d(v)+4, and so on. If d(v) is odd, the same pattern holds with odd times. This periodic structure is the only information we need from the adversary.
  3. Define a state as (u, p), where u is a vertex and p is the parity of time when we arrive there. Parity is sufficient because time increases deterministically by 1 each move.
  4. Initialize BFS from (S, 0). The initial time is zero.
  5. From a state (u, t), try all moves to a neighbor v and also the option of staying at u. Each move increases time to t+1.
  6. Before accepting a move to (v, t+1), check whether v is safe at time t+1. This means either t+1 < d(v), or (t+1 - d(v)) is odd.
  7. If the state is safe and not visited before, push it into the BFS queue.
  8. The first time we reach F in any parity state gives the minimum number of nights.

The correctness relies on the fact that BFS explores states in increasing time order. Once a state (v, p) is visited, any later arrival to the same (v, p) would only increase time and cannot improve safety conditions, since the unsafe condition depends monotonically on time within a fixed parity class.

Why it works

The adversary’s movement constraints reduce to a deterministic time-reachable set for each vertex. Instead of tracking its exact position, we classify when a vertex becomes permanently dangerous for a given parity of time. Our BFS avoids these forbidden time-vertex pairs. Because every valid strategy for our robot corresponds to a path in this time-expanded graph, and BFS finds the shortest such path, the first arrival at F is optimal among all safe strategies.
