Problem Understanding

We are working with a static array of integers, and each query gives us a segment of that array. For every segment, we must decide whether we can pick some nonempty subset of elements from that segment whose bitwise AND is exactly equal to a fixed target value k.

A subset AND behaves in a very restrictive way. When you take AND over multiple numbers, a bit remains 1 in the result only if it is 1 in every chosen element. So the result is essentially the intersection of bit patterns across the subset.

Each query is asking whether inside a subarray there exists at least one selection of elements whose common bit intersection matches k exactly, neither missing required bits nor introducing extra 1 bits.

The constraints are large, with up to 200,000 elements and 200,000 queries. Any solution that inspects each query independently over its range will immediately fail, since a naive scan per query would lead to about 40 billion operations in the worst case. Even segment-tree-like recomputation per query would be too slow if it rebuilds information from scratch.

A key observation comes from the structure of AND. Unlike sum or XOR, AND only decreases as we include more elements. This monotonic shrinking behavior is what makes range filtering possible.

A subtle edge case appears when k is not compatible with the array elements. For example, if k has a bit set that never appears in any element in the range, then no subset can produce k. Conversely, if k is 0, then any subset containing an element with disjoint bits can potentially reduce to 0, but only if all chosen elements share no conflicting mandatory bits. For instance, in a segment [3, 5], both contain overlapping bits, but selecting both gives 1, not 0, so a naive assumption that “0 is always achievable” would be incorrect.

Another tricky situation is when a single element already equals k. Then the answer is trivially YES regardless of other elements. But it is not sufficient to check only whether k appears; sometimes k is achievable only by ANDing multiple elements.

Approaches

A brute-force approach would enumerate all subsets inside each query range and compute their AND. For a range of length m, there are 2^m subsets, and computing each AND takes O(m) in naive form or O(1) with incremental updates, still leaving O(m·2^m) or O(2^m) per query. This is immediately impossible even for m as small as 20 in worst cases.

We need to exploit a structural property of AND. The crucial observation is that AND over a subset is always equal to one of the elements in a very specific closure sense: every bit in the result must appear in every chosen element, meaning the result must be a bitwise superset constraint across selected numbers.

Instead of thinking in terms of subsets, we flip the perspective. We want to know whether there exists a collection of elements whose AND equals k. This is equivalent to asking whether we can choose elements such that every chosen element contains all bits of k, and then the intersection of their extra bits cancels out exactly to k.

So any valid subset must consist only of elements that are supersets of k in bitwise sense. If an element has a bit set that is 0 in k, that bit is allowed, but if k has a bit 1, every chosen element must also have it. Thus we filter the array to elements satisfying (a_i & k) == k.

Now among these candidates, we need to check if there exists a subset whose AND does not introduce any extra 1 bits beyond k. This means that for every bit not in k, we must be able to eliminate it by choosing at least one element that has that bit as 0 among candidates, otherwise that bit would remain forced in the AND of any subset.

So the problem becomes a range question over bit coverage: within [l, r], among elements that already contain k, can we select some whose AND removes all extra bits?

This can be transformed into checking whether, for every bit position not in k, there exists at least one element in the range that is missing that bit while still being compatible with k. That is a standard range query problem that can be solved with preprocessing per bit using prefix sums or segment trees.

We maintain, for each bit, a prefix count of how many valid elements in a prefix have that bit set. Then for a query range, we can quickly check whether there exists at least one valid element with that bit unset.

This reduces each query to checking up to 30 bits with O(1) range queries.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We precompute information per bit position so that each query can be answered in constant time per bit.

  1. Build an array ok[i] that is true if a[i] contains all bits of k, meaning (a[i] & k) == k. We do this because any valid subset cannot include elements that miss required bits of k.
  2. For every bit b from 0 to 29, construct a prefix sum array pref[b] where pref[b][i] counts how many indices ≤ i are valid and have bit b set in a[i].
  3. For each query [l, r], we first consider only indices where ok[i] is true. If there are no such indices in the range, we immediately output NO because no subset can satisfy the required bit structure.
  4. We now check whether we can eliminate all bits outside k. For each bit b where k does not have that bit set, we compute how many valid elements in [l, r] have that bit set using prefix sums. If all valid elements in the range have bit b set, then that bit cannot be eliminated, so the AND of any subset would keep it, making k impossible.
  5. If for every bit not in k we find at least one valid element in the range that has that bit unset, then we can choose a subset that drives those bits out while preserving k, so we output YES.

Why it works

The key invariant is that any valid subset must be chosen from elements that already contain all bits of k. Within that restricted set, the AND over any subset can only remove bits by intersecting differing zero patterns. A bit outside k survives in the final AND if and only if every chosen element has that bit set. Therefore, to eliminate a bit, at least one chosen element must miss it. The range check ensures the existence of such an element for every irrelevant bit, which guarantees a subset can be formed whose AND collapses exactly to k.

The preprocessing step builds prefix sums for each bit so that we can count occurrences in any interval in O(1). The ok array filters candidates that are even eligible to contribute to k, since any violation immediately invalidates the subset construction.

Each query first counts how many eligible elements exist in the range. Then for every irrelevant bit, it checks whether there is at least one eligible element that does not contain that bit. If not, that bit is forced into every subset AND.
