This suggests that the answer is usually among a small number of globally competitive candidates, except when those candidates fall inside the forbidden row or column.
If we sort all items by value, the global maximum is the first candidate. If it does not violate either constraint, it is immediately the answer. If it does violate, then the answer must lie among items competing with it, typically items that differ in island or type. This pushes us toward maintaining fast access to “best per island” and “best per type”, so we can quickly escape forbidden categories.
The key structure that makes the solution work is maintaining, for every island and every type, a structure that can quickly return the best available item in that group, along with a fallback when the top candidate is invalid under the current query’s second restriction. - For an insertion, store the item in three places: a global container, the island bucket for its island, and the type bucket for its type. Each bucket keeps items ordered by value so that its maximum can be retrieved quickly.
- For a query
(x, y), first attempt to take the global best item. If it is valid, meaning its island is notxand its type is noty, it is immediately the answer. - If the global best is invalid, it belongs to either island

Edge Cases
When all items belong to the forbidden island, every candidate in island-based scanning disappears immediately. The algorithm handles this because island heaps are skipped entirely for the forbidden island, and no valid candidate is ever extracted from it.
