Instead of choosing which people to remove globally, we decide grouping first, and then inside each group we decide which people must be removed from that group structure. Since friendships only matter when endpoints are separated, we can encode deletion decisions as costs associated with cutting between segments and selecting active nodes.
This leads to a classic transformation: treat each person as either kept or removed, and model friendship penalties as edge costs in a cut system. Then we combine this with interval DP over positions.
For interval DP, let dp[i] be the minimum cost for the prefix of the sorted line up to position i. For each i, we try the last group ending at i, say starting at j+1. The cost of that group depends on x[i] − x[j+1], plus we must account for which nodes in (j+1, i) are removed and their associated penalties.
The crucial optimization is to precompute, for any interval [l, r], the minimum cost of handling removals inside it plus friendship penalties that are fully contained in it or cross its boundary. Since M is small, we can maintain for each interval a cost of treating all nodes in it as kept and then optionally “cutting out” nodes via a secondary DP or min-cut style formulation. In fact, because N is small, we can precompute interaction costs and fold them into interval transitions.
Thus the final solution becomes a DP over intervals with precomputed cost of “making a segment valid”.
The story is: brute force over subsets fails, but the linear ordering allows interval DP, and the limited number of friendships allows precomputation of internal costs so each interval transition is O(1) amortized.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We first sort people by their coordinates, although the problem already guarantees they are ordered. This ensures every valid group corresponds to a contiguous interval.
We define dp[i] as the minimum cost to handle the first i people.
We also precompute cost[l][r], the cost of forming a group using exactly the people from l to r as a block, including internal deletions and friendship penalties. Computing this directly requires considering which people in [l, r] are removed, so we compute it using a secondary DP or by transforming it into a minimum cut style contribution over that interval.
Once cost[l][r] is available, we compute dp by scanning endpoints. For each r from 1 to N, we try all possible l from 1 to r as the start of the last group, and update dp[r] using dp[l−1] + cost[l][r].
Each transition represents choosing the last group boundary. The value cost[l][r] already includes the optimal decision of who is removed inside that group, so the DP only handles segmentation.
Why it works
The correctness rests on the fact that optimal solutions can be decomposed into independent contiguous groups once the ordering is fixed. Any optimal grouping induces a partition of the line into segments, and within each segment the decision of which vertices to remove depends only on that segment and not on others except through additive boundary costs. This separation ensures that once cost[l][r] is correctly computed, the outer DP over segment boundaries reconstructs a globally optimal solution without interaction between segments.
