Alongside DSU, we maintain an array of current fish counts and a global maximum. Each operation only touches two DSU finds and one update, so we avoid scanning the array entirely.

  8. Mark i as opened by unioning it with i+1, meaning future searches will skip i entirely.

After these steps, the system always reflects correct fish accumulation after each operation, and the maximum is directly tracked.

Why it works

At any moment, DSU maintains the invariant that find(x) returns the smallest index ≥ x whose net is still closed. Once a section is opened, it is removed from the set of valid representatives by linking it to its successor. This guarantees that every fish transfer always lands in the correct next closed position.

Since each section is removed exactly once and only redirected forward, no fish ever “disappears” or skips a valid landing point. The process is equivalent to repeatedly contracting open indices out of the line, and DSU compresses these contractions efficiently.
